One of the questions we always ask during our Discovery Sessions is, 'What are two or three things you love about yourself?" For many, this is such a difficult thing to verbalize. Some feel they are bragging and shy away from answering. Some feel like there is nothing they love physically, there is only room for improvement. It's awkward to say the least, to name things that we feel are beautiful about ourselves.
It begs the question, why are we so quick to point out what is wrong with our bodies physically? Are our bodies really here for 'fixing'? Here is some food for thought:
Why are our fat arms are beautiful?
a) They hug people. b) They cradle infants.
What about our round bellies? Why are they beautiful?
a) Because it carried our babies.
b) It digests the food we nourish our bodies with.
c) It also is a key indicator when we "just know" that something is wrong; our gut tells us more in an instant than any research will unfold.
If you have gotten this far in this old newsletter, please respond with AT LEAST ONE thing that you love about yourself. You don't even have to say why....unless you want! I will start: I really like my cheekbones.
What do you love about yourself physically? Your collar bones? Your eyes? Your full lips? Your nice smile? Your butt? Your petite feet? Your legs? Your nail beds? Let me know!
I'm looking forward to hearing from you!
Once upon a time, there was a woman named Trinity. Trinity was very frustrated about her weight. Every day, she would think, “I'm waiting to lose weight before I get anything new.” Or, “I could never look like her, I'm too big.”
One day, Trinity went to the NW Women's Expo and came across a booth of Frumpiness Assassin's called Style By Wendy. She learned that “waiting to lose weight” was an excuse she used often in her life, but she was not actually losing any lbs. Her life was being put on hold because she was always waiting to get ready, to get ready, to get ready!
Because of that, she decided to meet with a Style By Wendy Associate to get an updated, trendier look, regardless of her pant size. Because of that, her fresh look got her compliments from her co-workers and soon thereafter, Trinity joined a nutrition program after her shopping trip. Until finally, 5 months later, she lost so much weight that her new clothes didn't fit anymore. Trinity proclaimed that her shopping excursion was the best money she ever spent because it propelled her to change her patterns of consumption: different choices in how to dress her body and with the food she ate!
In our house, closet space is hard to come by. We purchased a 1931 brick Tudor, and I guess back in the 1930's, when the original family built the home, they didn't own as many shoes or blouses as I do. Collectively.
I am in homes every day that are blessed with kitchen pantries, walk-in's, and lovely linen closets. When cleaning closet space out, the criteria we use to determine if something should be donated is as follows:
1. Have you worn it in the last 6-8 months?
2. Is it the right color for you?
3. Is it free of holes, pills and stains?
4. Does it fit you right now (not when you lose that ten lbs)?
5. Does it make you feel like a 10 when you wear it (even your pajama's)?
I propose a challenge the summer. For the next 7 days, every day, choose 10 things from every closet, cupboard or cranny to give away.
Day 1: Choose 10 pieces from each child's closet to donate
Day 2: Pick 10 things from you or your spouses closet
Day 3: Pick 10 things from the coat/hall closet
Day 4: Choose 10 things from under the kitchen sink
Day 5: 10 items from laundry room cupboard
Day 6: 10 items from the pantry
Day 7: 10 items in the bathroom cabinet
Donate so that others may treasure your gifts! With a matter of a few minutes each day, you will feel great at the end of the week. With 70 less items in your house, you won't even know they are missing! Happy closet flossing. And if all else fails, call us. If we aren't cleaning out our own closets, we'll help you.
It's the 7th day of 2015 - one week down! And though the champagne from the New Year's eve party is now flat, your motivation for that resolution is still strong.
If one of your resolutions is to get more organized - why not start in your closet?
There are three ways to clean it out and organize the space:
1. Do it yourself
2. Ask a friend to help you
3. Hire a professional
Call today to schedule a Closet Flossing Session - let's get organized and implement a system that's easy to follow, so it stays that way. It feels so good!
Drawing from my past experience working in a Gastroenterology surgery center, I find a striking resemblance between cleaning out a closet and cleaning out a colon.
Your colon, much like your closet, is a very private personal space. Similar to having a colonoscope enter your personal space, inviting a Wardrobe Stylist into your closet can be a little nerve racking.
Many people say they are embarrassed to invite me into their closet, claiming “I wouldn’t want anyone to see my mess.” It’s kinda like cleaning before the cleaning lady gets there – she doesn’t care about your mess, in fact it makes her feel as if she has job security.
I can assure you, just as your messy closet doesn’t faze us, your other mess doesn’t faze the doctor. The dust, cat hairs and stashed sex toys are no different than anybody else’s. Once you’ve seen one, you’ve seen ‘em all. Please know, there is no judgment. Schedule your closet clean-out today! You will feel so refreshed once it’s all over.
“Cinderella and Dorothy are proof that a pair of shoes can change a life.”
How do you wear shoes you love, but aren't sure how to style them?
During a Styling Session where we create outfits with the clothes you already have, it occurred to me that my client was not wearing some of her best shoes! She had a darling pair of red flats, a cute faux fur cow print wedge and a fabulous pair of Manolo Blahnik heels.
All of these shoes looked brand new. Why on earth would someone purchase the cutest shoes in the world and not wear them?
The answer: “I don’t know what to wear with them. I like the shoe, but I don't know how to wear them.”
Taking the red flats, we found a cute navy skirt in her closet. And next we found a white tee. My client had a string of pearls, which dressed up the plain vanilla tee-shirt. She had a bracelet laced with red in her jewelry box! So, we put that on too. And last, I had her apply a great red lipstick. Viola. Red shoes worked wonders for Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. Now my client will walk down the road with confidence in a cute red flat, a bracelet with red and matching lipstick!
So how do you wear shoes you love, but aren't sure how to style them?
Start from the ground up. Build your outfit around the shoe! Pick out your shoes first, and then get dressed.
If your clothes are not becoming of you, then you should be coming to us.
Faux-Pas #5: Wearing your worn out heels. If you have worn your favorite pair of heels down to the nub so the metal spike is clacking on all surfaces, then it's time to take that beloved shoe to the cobbler OR buy a new pair. There is nothing worse then the sound of metal on pavement. Not to mention it will tear up your hard wood floors. So fix the heel cap or use this as an excuse to get a new pair!
Faux-Pas #4: Waiting to lose weight. I realize many of us are a few too many pounds from our ideal weight. But Ladies, here's the deal: when you dress for your body size and shape today, you will walk straighter (which gives the appearance of a slimmer physique). You will command a different presence. People will notice how you take care of yourself - how confident you look. This is no joke. It's time to stop waiting for the weight to shift before you start treating yourself like the sassy woman we all know you are. Dress well for your body size and shape today...I promise, with the new look, you will ride that wave of confidence into a nutrition class. Feeling this good will make you want to start a healthy diet and exercise program - I can say that with certainty, because my client's actually do it!
Faux-Pas #3: Stressing about what to wear in the morning. Eliminate the rush and feeling of "I have nothing to wear" every morning by planning what you are going to wear the night before. Make it part of your routine - don't forget to include 2 or 3 accessories, and put everything on one hanger. Or better still, hire Style By Wendy to create a Look-Book of 30 outfits with the clothes you already have - then you will never have to worry about what to wear again since an entire month is laid out for you!
Faux-Pas#2: Wearing yoga pants and a Lulu Lemon toplike it's an outfit. C'mon people. Workout clothes are workout clothes. Meant for the gym. Before Lulu, we wore sweatpants (think Rocky Balboa training outside). While I applaud the athletic industry for making a-go at fashion, these things are still meant to catch our sweat. Let's be realistic here...I'm not saying they are inappropriate for running to the grocery store last minute, or dropping your kids off at school but any other errands and it's just a painful sight. It takes the same amount of energy to put on a pair of jeans and Uggs to create a far more appropriate 'running errands' look and equally as comfortable. Enough said.
Faux-Pas #1: Hooded Sweatshirts. These puppies are meant for petting the cat, going to the gym or watching the game. Unless you are still in college, it's time to graduate into something less hoodie-like. Upgrade that sucker to a smart looking jacket or a cute sweater. You will appear much more of a sophisticate rather than looking like you came straight from working in your garage.
This month, on April 5 was my Grandmother's 95th birthday. I tease her, "Grandma, how old is dirt? Is dirt 95 years old?"
When it was time to get ready for her party, she picked out her outfit. I love the color, the accessories, and mostly her smile outlined in lipstick (see below).
The only two things that she wanted for her birthday were candles, which she lights when she says her prayers, and "wrinkle cream". Isn't that a hoot? Does wrinkle cream work on 95 years?
Throughout the whole night, as she was eating and drinking her wine flips, she looked radiant. Even when the venue closed, and the after-party took place, she was there. Her energy amazes me!
When it was time for bed, I helped her get ready. Part of that includes saying prayers. Do you know that she still gets down on her 95 year old knees to say the rosary? My knees were uncomfortable....
As I was tucking her in, she said, "Let's see. Today I'm 95," as she started counting on her fingers, "96-97-98-99-100. I have 5 more years to go before I'll see Grandpa Charles and Uncle Mike."
She is such an AMAZING woman. If you have a Grandma or Grandpa story, please share it with me here or on Facebook.
“Don’t start a diet, start a change in consumption.” -Eric Petersen
As a Wardrobe Stylist, I often hear from potential clients that they are waiting to lose weight before they move forward. In my experience, nothing ever changes – meaning, 6 months later, the person is still waiting to lose weight. And they still stand in front of their closet every morning with nothing to wear, wishing their closet was organized, wishing they felt better about how they looked.
Working with a stylist will get you an immediate result. Dressing for your body shape and size today is a first step to wellness. Dressing well now will result in walking with more confidence, standing straighter, and getting compliments. Studies have shown that how you dress has an impact on how well you perform. It’s a no brainer.
The word diet is the worst word ever. It represents temporary evil, vanity, and self-sacrifice in hopes for an image of yourself that you hope others see. Instead, think about what you consume and feel what you consume. What you put in, is what you get out. The human body works just that way. Eat and drink all you want with knowledge of the results. Eat well and be well all the time. Make it habit. Habits become easy. So start a change in consumption.
The same goes for getting dressed every day. The effort you put in is what you get out. Start a change in the way you shop, how you dress – immediate results will follow. Project the best image possible for you size and shape today. You won’t ever look back.
